40 Congressmen’s Plan to Ban Trump from Official Posts

A group of 40 Democratic representatives from the House of Representatives launched an initiative to ban former U.S. President Donald Trump (Republican) from holding public office based on the constitutional amendment of the 1860s against former Confederates. It was reported by the Fox News TV channel.

According to the channel, the bill was proposed among others by Congressman David Chichillin, who previously spearheaded Trump’s second impeachment attempt. Under the 14th Amendment, individuals who have previously taken an oath of allegiance to the U.S. Constitution and subsequently participated in an armed insurrection against the U.S. government or have provided “aid or assistance” to enemies of the United States could not hold public office.

One of the clauses in the bill provides that “under the third section of the 14th Amendment to the Constitution, Donald Trump may not be re-elected as President of the United States and may not hold any position in the United States in civil or military service. These are sanctions because of Trump’s alleged involvement in the January 2021 takeover of the Capitol, when his supporters stormed the Congress building to prevent the results of the November 2020 presidential election, which was won by Joe Biden.
Democrats believe this rule should be applied to Trump, who they claim instigated an uprising against the U.S. on Jan. 6, 2021.

Former U.S. Vice President Mike Pence previously said the appointment of a special prosecutor for former President Donald Trump’s role in the Jan. 6 Capitol assault was very troubling. Pence also allowed cooperation with the investigation, noting that the degree of involvement would be determined by his lawyers. Former U.S. President Donald Trump has announced his intention to run for president in 2024 immediately following the November midterm elections to Congress.
