Today, the catastrophic situation in Houston with flooded and dark streets with no operating traffic lights and busted water pipes immediately brings into the mind a nightmarish image of a dystopia. Yes, entire Texas currently is going through a dark apocalypse which is a harbinger of a more ominous future for America.
It has been for several days that the disaster-weary Texans endure ice, snow, and power outage, as record-low temperatures continue to drop while the main roads remain impassable.
According to the local officials in the Lone Star state, millions of residents have no access to electricity since the power grids badly suffered from the cold weather and frigid blasts. All the while, there is no sign of a looming federal relief operation.
The massive Texas blizzard divulged the truth about how fragile is the federal-state infrastructure and that the federal establishment in Washington, D.C. is completely hapless in the face of a situation where civilians struggle to keep themselves alive from freezing to death.
In the meantime, the primary culprits like Governor Greg Abbott and Senator Ted Cruz treacherously fled frigid Texas to Mexico amid the public controversy over the weak performance of the Biden’s administration vis-à-vis the winter storm as meteorological forecasts suggest more frigid temperatures in hardest-hit states.
Yet, we must rejoice. Why? Because NASA’s spacecraft successfully touched down on Mars, searching for signs of ancient microbial life and forget about the misery and mayhem of millions who plunged into a pre-industrial dark age in Texas. Hallelujah!
The fatal doom of life support infrastructures such as water supply pipelines, food distribution networks and power plants in Texas all spoke to a national failure that embroiled the United States: the ship is sinking!
Texan unutterable despair has also drawn attention to the issue of inequality and injustice in today America.
The Social unrest in the United States shows clearly that after four decades of neoliberal dominated economic hegemony, free-market capitalism failed to meet the demands of 21st-century American society. In fact, the catastrophic neoliberal strategies had put the American citizens in chains and provoked racial, religious, and ethnic discrimination.
Texas’s mishap reflects the moral, political and civil decline of the United States and the corrupt federal bureaucracy! The question for the future, one that no historian can answer, is whether the current decline of America means that Biden’s administration would desist from igniting wars and interfering in other countries’ domestic affairs and heed to America’s fundamental shortcomings or not
