neral Soleimani's Assassination for Washington According to Top American Figures
General Qassem Soleimani was killed in a drone strike near Baghdad airport on January 3, 2020 by the order of US President Donald Trump. Following the US move, political observers and top American figures warned of the negative consequences for Washington.
Adam Schiff, chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, about the consequences of the assassination said: "I am worried about the assassination of this Iranian general. This action could lead to escalation of tensions between US and Iranian forces."
Schiff previously stated that the American people do not want a war with Iran. He also tweeted: "Congress does not allow war and the American people do not want a war with Iran. All measures must now be taken to protect our forces from possible tensions escalation and growing dangers."
New York Times wrote that Joe Biden watched the development, said: "The United States must wait for the consequences of the action from Iranian military due to the Soleimani assassinationナ Although the government statement says that the purpose of this action was to prevent further movements of Iran, but this action will surely have the opposite resultナ Trump owes Americans a strategy and plan to protect embassy troops and staff, our people, and our interests at home and abroad."
Referring to the consequences of the assassination, Peter Binnart, a professor of journalism at New York University, wrote: "By assassinating General Soleimani, Trump started a war with Iran that he will neither end nor win. This war has had dire consequences for the Iranian people, prompting Tehran to resume its nuclear program. Continuing Trump's policies will lead to either war or further humiliation of the United States, or both
