India and France Strengthen Ties, Paving the Way for Pragmatic Diplomacy?
Recently, France’s president, Emmanuel Macron, embarked on a visit to India. On invitation by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the visit was extended on the occasion of India's Republic Day. Over the years, similar invitations to the President of France have become a staple in India's diplomatic calendar, fostering a deepening relationship between the two countries.

India, ever the shrewd player on the global economic stage, has deftly maneuvered its way into securing gains on both the Eastern and Western fronts. A prime example of India's pragmatic approach lies in its engagement with both Ukraine and Russia during their ongoing conflict. Through skillful negotiation, India has managed to forge economic ties with both belligerents, reaping substantial benefits from this diplomatic tightrope act. On the other hand, within India's intellectual framework, France assumes a critical role as a gateway that connects Asia to the West, facilitating the smooth passage of India's economic products into Europe through the enchanting gates of France.



During Macron's visit, a significant business entourage accompanied him, culminating in the signing of multiple bilateral agreements. This robust economic engagement not only bolsters India's economic prospects but also offers respite to France, grappling with a tumultuous economic climate fraught with strikes and mass demonstrations.



Notably, the discussion centered around the burgeoning influx of Indian students migrating to France in pursuit of scientific education. Paris, in an earnest display of goodwill, has opened its university doors to this talented pool of Indian students. Currently, an estimated 300,000 Indian students are enrolled in French universities, presenting immense potential for France. A portion of this cohort, upon their return to India, will undoubtedly contribute to their country while also addressing scientific, medical, and engineering challenges in the host country. French investment in scientific exchanges will undoubtedly yield mutually beneficial outcomes.



The military sphere represents yet another crucial facet of India-France ties. In recent years, the Indian government has invested significantly in fortifying its military sector, particularly in light of its long-standing feud with Pakistan. A key priority for India lies in the domestic production of military equipment with the aid of Western consultants, particularly the French, reflecting India's enduring interest in the French aircraft industry. The indomitable presence of French Mirage warplanes in India has indubitably bolstered the Indian military aviation industry. These symbiotic trade relations will invariably augment the French weapon industry as well. However, the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine has cast a shadow of uncertainty over the realization of short-term contracts between India and France, dampening the immediate prospects.



The Republic Day ceremony, initially intended to host Biden, was met with his non-acceptance, suggesting disappointment on the part of the United States regarding Modi’s pragmatic stance. Aiming to fill the void, Modi asked Macron to visit New Delhi.



To reinforce its pragmatic aspirations of becoming a bridge between Asia and the West, India has successfully brought Paris within its fold. As the principal energy supplier to Russia, India seeks to expand its energy export portfolio to the West this year. This ambitious endeavor can only be realized by garnering the trust and support of key Europeans, which offers both a cheap labor force and security. Moreover, India finds itself in fierce competition with Beijing to attract European investment, particularly in the face of mounting military tensions between China and Taiwan. India, adept at anticipating these circumstances, has positioned itself as the ideal investment destination for these discerning investors.
