What steps have Palestinian groups taken so far to achieve unity?
Since the beginning of the occupation of Palestine due to the divisive policies of the US and its allies, Palestine has never brought all Palestinian groups together, but now, over time, the Trump’s "deal of the century" has given them a chance to unite around one axis. The Palestinians must realize that they have no way of uniting to win.
Establishment of resistance groups against Israel
With the establishment of the first resistance group in Palestine in 1979, the Zionists found themselves faced with a phenomenon whose philosophy of existence was based on the elimination of the Zionist regime. They may not have taken this issue seriously at first, but when the First Intifada was formed in 1987, eight years after the founding of the first resistance group, the Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ), and Hamas established itself at the same time as the second resistance group, the Palestinian Islamic Resistance Movement. The Zionists realized that this phenomenon is the staff of Moses that will drag all the infidels to the sea.
Attempts to divide the resistance groups
When the first intifada began in Palestine, the Zionists found themselves in such a quandary that they agreed to negotiate with the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) and present a peaceful image of themselves. Those who had carried out tragedies such as the occupation of Beirut, Sabra and Shatila massacre since the mid-1970s were now appearing to be peaceful in the face of resistance. The Zionists, who refused to even accept the presence of Arafat and members of the Palestine Liberation Organization at the Madrid conference, and whose condition was to be present in Madrid in 1991, the absence of PLO members, signed the 1993 Oslo Accords two years later after two secret negotiations with Arafat.
Dichotomy of resistance groups
The Oslo Accords, which appeared to be a peace agreement but acted as a border between all Palestinian factions; Or resistance or compromise. By signing the agreement with the Zionists and accepting the phenomenon of compromise and negotiation, the Palestinian groups were divided into two groups: the group that wanted to negotiate with the Zionists to reach Palestinian territory, and the resistance groups that demanded resistance until the liberation of all Palestine. Since then, the way of the resistance groups has been separated from the pro-negotiation groups. There was even a split between some factions of the Palestine Liberation Organization, and those who until then had been members of the PLO but were unwilling to accept negotiation broke away from the PLO and their own group, forming a new group and structure to resist the Zionists.
Lack of unity of resistance groups with pro-negotiation groups
The Zionist action in creating this faction of compromise and negotiation was like a sword that divided the Palestinians into two disparate factions, two factions that never merged. Since then, the compromisers have always sought to negotiate with the Zionists and sign a final peace agreement that would establish an independent Palestinian state in a part of historic Palestine. The resistance has also emphasized its slogan that the solution to the Palestinian issue and the establishment of a Palestinian state throughout Palestine is the history of resistance.
Trump coming to power and changing political equations
With the advent of Trump, there was a change in the Palestinian arena that bridged the gap. Donald Trump, like other US presidents, presented a plan for Palestine, but this time a different plan. Previous US government initiatives, known as the Middle East Peace Process, created the same process that resulted in the Oslo Accords and the creation of a strategic divide between the Palestinians. But Donald Trump, willingly or unwillingly, turned a blind eye to the issue that turned this rift into a union.
The deal of the century Unites Palestinian Groups
Contrary to previous plans, the deal of the century emphasizes the establishment of a single Jewish state throughout historic Palestine, a Jewish state that has designated Jerusalem as its capital and will recognize it as the Jewish homeland. Trump's move had no further consequence: the elimination of the compromising faction and the philosophy of negotiation. With this move, Trump practically ended three decades of negotiations between the Palestinian without any results, and it proved that nothing in the name of negotiation was anything but an illusion.
Trump's blows to the Palestinians
Trump's "deal of the century" has been around since 2017, but the first practical steps were taken with the relocation of the US embassy to Jerusalem. The second blow came with the elimination of the UN refugee agency UNRWA, after which the US government cut off aid to the Palestinian Authority and plunged them into financial crisis. They then closed the PLO office in Washington, and finally tried to sell Palestine at the Manama-Bahrain Economic Conference, resulting in the frustration of compromise supporters.
Palestinian groups on the path to unity
The first time Palestinian groups came together was through the Manama Economic Conference. When the Palestinians saw that the Americans actually wanted to buy Palestine with the money of other countries and give them money and financial promises in exchange for their land, they came together and in a united position declared their opposition to Trump's plan. At the same time as the Manama Economic Conference, all Palestinian groups gathered in Lebanon to express their opposition to the conference and its results. However, before the conference, the Palestinians announced in a united position that no Palestinians would attend the Manama conference. This was the first time that from 1979 to 2019, during the 40 years of the resistance, all Palestinian groups agreed on one issue.
Cancel agreements with the Israelis
The second step in the unification of the Palestinians came at a time when the Zionists, continuing their occupation plans to establish a Jewish homeland, intensified the destruction of Palestinian homes and the open occupation of Palestinian lands, which even Europeans and Zionist supporters called for in their so-called peace plans. Following this action, the Zionists condemned the UN, the EU, and countries such as Russia, China, and actors such as Japan. But most important of all, the Palestinian Authority responded to the Zionists. In an unprecedented move, Mahmoud Abbas gathered the leaders of the compromise faction and announced that it would cancel all previous agreements of the compromise faction with the Zionist regime, including security cooperation. This unprecedented move by Abu Mazen was welcomed by resistance groups. The important point was that this time Abu Mazen called for the implementation of the 2017 Cairo National Reconciliation Agreement, an agreement according to which the structure of the PLO should be changed and all resistance groups should join it. Abu Mazen had previously refused to implement the agreements contained in the document and had refused to implement them under various pretexts.
The Palestinian compromisers must learn from the past and not be deceived by the promises and lies of the West, and the Palestinians must take practical steps as soon as possible to unite their positions and strengthen the resistance in the field as much as possible; An action that could lead to the liberation of Palestine in the not-too-distant future.
