The Israeli War on Gaza: Unveiling Western Hypocrisy and the True Cost of Support for Israel
By: A. Mahdavi
The ongoing Israeli onslaught against Gaza, a military operation that resembles more like a campaign of ethnic cleansing, has shattered the illusion of Western commitment to human rights. While the United States and its Western allies have long touted themselves as champions of human rights and democracy, their policies vis-à-vis the Palestinian question expose deeply ingrained hypocrisy and a double standard. In fact, this war has served as a stark unveiling of the true cost of Western support for Israel: the suffering of 2.5 million human beings and, in the meantime, the erosion of their own proclaimed values of human rights.
The United States, often presented by the mainstream media as a beacon of human rights, has a long history of selective application of these principles, deploying them as a political tool rather than a genuine commitment to humanity. This double standard was previously obscured by carefully curated narratives and crafted rhetoric. However, the current tragedy in Gaza has ripped away the veil, leaving the world to witness the raw reality.
The scale of Israeli barbarity, documented by the United Nations, free media outlets, and human rights organizations, cannot be ignored. The indiscriminate bombing of civilian-populated areas, the targeting of hospitals and schools, the systematic destruction of infrastructure—these are not merely acts of war crimes according to international laws and norms but a deliberate campaign of terror and massacre. Yet, these atrocities have been enabled by the unwavering support of the United States, providing the Israeli regime with an endless supply of weaponry and a shield of diplomacy.
The numbers speak volumes. Over 27,000 bombs, rockets, and anti-trench bombs have been sent to Israel, along with extensive logistical support, all underwritten by American taxpayers. This ignominous commitment, regardless of who occupies the White House, has emboldened Israel, granting it impunity to kill with reckless abandon and disregard for human life.
As mentioned earlier, the US support goes beyond mere material aid. It extends to a relentless campaign of political rhetoric that deflects criticism and blames Palestinians for their own plight, casting Israel as the victim of aggression. This blatant bias, coupled with the immense military support, encourages further violence.
Beyond the political maneuvering, there’s a disturbing undercurrent of racism that fuels Western support for Israel. Many Western politicians, steeped in a colonial mindset, fail to view Palestinians as equal human beings. Their lack of empathy towards the Palestinian victims, particularly women and children, reveals a profound prejudice and disregard for human suffering. The perpetuation of narratives that depict a "clash of civilizations" further fuels this racist view, justifying Israeli war crimes and dismissing Palestinian pain.
This double standard has been exposed to the world, triggering widespread civil protests in both the West and the East. People are no longer willing to accept the carefully crafted narratives and are demanding accountability from their governments. This shift in public opinion poses a significant challenge to Western governments, forcing them to confront the true cost of their unwavering support for Israel.
The Gaza war has served as a wake-up call, shattering the illusion of Western moral authority. The entire world is witnessing the erosion of trust in Western governments, the undermining of their self-righteous values, and their complicity in the suffering of a nation.
As the dust settles, the international community must demand accountability from the US and its allies. The war in Gaza, a tragic reminder of the devastating consequences of unchecked power and blatant hypocrisy, cannot be forgotten. The Palestinian people deserve justice, and the fight for their rights must continue.
