Madrid Conference background
In late 1980s with the Palestinian fighters inching closer to the goals of their armed resistance, the Zionists - who were scared of the Palestinian Intifada and saw their existence at risk - moved toward negotiating with Palestinians. By providing a contact channel, they tried to distract Palestinians from their struggle and to stop them with negotiations and compromise.
Madrid peace conference
Madrid peace conference was held in the Spanish capital based on an initiative by then U.S. President George Bush Senior which was aimed at forging an Arab-Zionist compromise.
Preconditions of the Zionists before attending Madrid Conference (October 1991):
1. No members of the Palestinian Liberation Organization or Palestinians living in al-Quds be present in the conference
2. The Palestinian delegation cannot independently take part in the conference; a Palestinian-Jordanian delegation can attend.
Madrid Conference (October 1991)
The conference opened on Wednesday October 30, 1991 with a speech by then U.S. President George Bush Senior. The Palestinian delegation took part jointly with a Jordanian delegation and no PLO members attended, as the Zionist regime had demanded.
