On September 22, 1980, just three hours after the Iraqi Ba’athist regime's attack on Iran, 8 Iranian Phantom fighter bombers struck Iraq's Shoaibiah and Kut air bases in Operation Vengeance. That was a minor operation aimed at distracting the enemy before the main operation was planned under the supervision of Iran's Air Force Commander Major General Javad Fakouri.
Late in the night, on September 22, 1980 the 99-page plan for the operation was concluded. The air bases in Tehran, Hamedan, Bushehr, Dezful, Shiraz and Isfahan prepared the fighter jets overnight as they were expected to start the operation at the sunrise.
Operation Shadow of Alborz with Kaman 99 as its operational plan, started in the early hours of September 23, 1980. By midday, 140 Iranian bombers had attacked Iraq. The fighters reached Iranian airports with the support of F14 fighter jets that were waiting at the border.
