In essence, Hajj has two main elements: moving closer to God in thought and practice, and avoiding the Taghut [false gods] and Satan with our spirit and body. All of the required rituals and forbidden deeds during Hajj are designed for these two, for preparing to do these and for being able to take steps in this direction. Indeed, this is the essence of Islam and all the Divine invitations, “Certainly We raised a Messenger in every nation [to preach,] ‘Worship Allah and shun the Taghut [false gods].’” (Holy Qur’an 16:36)
