The Algerian people getting the promise of independence joined the ranks of the French forces in World War II, but this demand was met with widespread repression by France, and thousands of Algerians were massacred. The systematic massacre of the Algerian people by French troops began with the massacre of Satif and Glyma and continued until Algeria's independence in 1962.
About one million people were killed by French forces during Algeria's independence struggle.
