According to the Encyclopaedia,the goal of John Baptiste Colbert, the finance minister of King Louis XIV of France, in establishing the French East India Company was to reform the French economy, which was to be done by colonizing India and plundering its capital. But the company only succeeded for a short time and soon ran into financial problems.
