During the four years of World War I, more than 124,000 tons of gas (chemical warfare agent) were produced and used by warring countries, leaving about 1.3 million victims, of which between 100,000 and 260,000 (according to various statistics) were civilians. Interestingly, France has used more chemical weapons over the years than any other country.
