Having a semi-arid climate, Iran has always faced the problem of water shortage; and therefore, the dam industry has constantly been in the spotlight. Pre-Islamic Revolution: A total of 19 reservoir dams with a reservoir storage capacity of 13 billion cubic meters (equivalent to 25%) and an adjustable annual water capacity of 14 billion cubic meters were reached the operation stage in the country with the help of foreign engineers.
Post-Islamic Revolution: Relying on the ability of domestic engineers, 165 reservoir dams with a total volume of about 51 billion cubic meters (equivalent to 75%) and adjustable water capacity of 37 billion cubic meters were put into operation. This, besides bringing self-sufficiency in dam construction industry, placed Iran as the third country in the world to build dams and export dam services to more than 20 countries in the world. China and Turkey respectively rank first and second in the world.
