In September 2015, then Iraqi Prime Minister Heidar al-Abadi announced that the PMU is part of Iraqi government forces. In December 2016, Iraq's parliament approved legislation to support PMU forces. The approval turned PMU into a legitimate body and part of the Iraqi army which can act under the supervision of Iraq's supreme national security council.
