Madrid Conference background
In late 1980s with the Palestinian fighters inching closer to the goals of their armed resistance, the Zionists - who were scared of the Palestinian Intifada and saw their existence at risk - moved toward negotiating with Palestinians. By providing a contact channel, they tried to distract Palestinians from their struggle and to stop them with negotiations and compromise.
