In 2012: he became a member of the political bureau of Hamas in the Gaza Strip and was responsible for the security file.
In 2013: he became a member of the general political bureau and responsible for the military file.
In 2015: he was put in charge of the Israeli prisoners file by al-Qassam Brigades. In 2017: he was appointed head of Hamas political bureau in the Gaza Strip. In 2021 he was re-elected as head of the political bureau for a second term.
