The most widespread and catastrophic use of recorded chemical agents against humanity since World War I was in the 1980s by the Iraqi regime.
According to a document presented by Iran to the Disarmament Conference, the number of chemical weapons in Iraq from January 1981 to March 1988 was 242, with about 44,000 casualties.
