After the victory of the Islamic Revolution, the Ba'ath party in Iraq felt strongly threatened by the Shiites gaining power, because a large part of the Iraqi population was Shiites.
As a result, In 1979, political relations between Iraq and Iran worsened, as the two countries exchanged withdrawal of ambassadors in March 1980 and reduced the level of diplomatic representation, and Tariq Aziz, Deputy Prime Minister at the time, was subjected to an assassination attempt, which the Iraqi authorities accused the Dawa Party of being behind them.
