The Egyptian professor, Yahya El-Mashad, can be considered the most important and most famous nuclear scientist in Iraq. El-Mashad was also an employee of the Iraqi Atomic Energy Organization while teaching at the University of Baghdad.

In Iraq, Professor El-Mashad pursued a plan and goal that ultimately cost him his life, which was to rebuild the Iraqi nuclear facilities that were damaged during Iran's Operation “Burning Sword” in 1980 and Israeli Operation “Opera” in 1981.

He was assassinated by the Mossad on June 13, 1980, in a hotel in Paris.
