Government support for Salman Rushdie
On November 11, 1988, the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Margaret Thatcher, rejected the request of the Union of Muslim Organizations to prosecute Salman Rushdie and Penguin Publications. Following this incident, the British government announced that anti-sacrilege laws would apply only to Christianity.
