In the morning of October 18, 2009 Brigadier General Shushtari along with 41 others including a number of IRGC commanders, civilians, Sunni leaders and clerics were martyred by a suicide agent of terrorist leader Abdolmalik Rigi who attacked a conference of "Unity among Shia and Sunni tribes of Iran" in Sarbaz region, Sistan and Balochestan province.
